Scratch Chocolate Cake


  • 1 Tablespoon butter
  • 1 1/4 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs, separated
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 cups cake flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda (add to the buttermilk)
  • 2 squares baking chocolate, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla


  1. Preheat oven to 375°
  2. Cream butter and sugar in a stand mixer.
  3. Add in the egg yolks and the melted chocolate squares.
  4. Mix the baking soda with the buttermilk in a small bowl, then pour into the egg/ sugar mixture.
  5. Add flour and mix well.
  6. Gently fold in the egg whites.
  7. Pour into prepared pans and bake for 30 minutes or until knife comes out clean.
