Removing Ink Spots

Removing Ink Spots

Question: How do I remove an ink spot from furniture or clothes?

Getting ink out of furniture or clothing can be a challenge and does not always come out 100%.  Here are a few tips that I have found that work most of the time on items around the house that just happened to get marked with a pen.

The first thing to remember is that the sooner you get the spot the better.  The longer that ink sits there the harder it is going to be to get out.

Before trying any of these methods, test a small hidden part of the item to make sure you are not going to ruin or fade the fabric with the cleaning method.

Solution #1- Soap and water

Before getting experimental, the first plan of attack should be plain old soap and water.  Start by dapping the area with a clean paper towel or rag.  Lift as much of the ink off as you can.  Then, using dish soap and warm water rub the area with your finger and then rinse.  On some surfaces, this will do the trick!

Solution #2- Cuticle remover solution

Pour a small amount of cuticle remover on a clean rag and gently dab the area.  Once the dabbing stops lifting the ink, gently rub the spot with a clean portion of the rag with more cuticle remover solution.  Once the spot has lifted, rinse out the item and wash as normal.

Solution #3- Rubbing alcohol

Pour a small amount of rubbing alcohol on a clean rag and gently dab the area.  Once the dabbing stops lifting the ink, gently rub the spot with a clean portion of the rag with more rubbing alcohol.  Once the spot has lifted, rinse out the item and wash as normal.

Solution #4- Hydrogen Peroxide

This method is usually best as a follow up solution to one of the previous solutions where you still have a faded spot remaining on a lighter fabric.  Pour a small amount of hydrogen peroxide on the spot.   Allow to remain on the fabric for up to 30 minutes, then wash as normal.
